“Letters” Great Comet Storyboard

Inspired by the song “Letters” from Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, I went through the process of sketching out 6 storyboards accompanying lyrical scenes. I started by sketching out four thumbnails for six framed scenes each, then chose a final composition for each scene. Then I shot reference photos based on those thumbnails to create more finalized illustrations I outlined with micron pens and “colored” with black watercolor paint. I compiled the thumbnail sketches, reference photos, and final pieces in a power point for sequential viewing. Since these storyboards weren’t edited sequentially or with adhering audio (in other words, made into an animatic), their clarity is especially crucial. Viewers won’t have full context provided by a full sequence or the script accompanying them in some way. Thus, the composition of the frames needs to convey character actions and emotions where viewers will understand on a fundamental level.
